Market Ready Pigs

A pig that’s ready to be processed into pork or sent “to market”. The ideal market weight for these animals changes with pork demand and usually market ready pigs weigh over 100kg.

Finishers

An older pig, usually over about 60kg live weight; one that is in the finishing stage of its growth, nearing market weight.

Weaners

If you’re thinking about starting with pigs, buying a few weaners is your best bet. Weaners are pigs that have been weaned from their mother – usually about 8 weeks old. They will have been eating solid food for quite a few weeks, and they should be fine without their mother at this stage.

Boars

First recognised in 1868 the Large White owes its origins to the old Yorkshire breed....

They are long-bodied with excellent hams and fine white hair and, as their name suggests, they are characterised by large size..

Sows

A sow is a mature female pig, generally 10+ months of age, who has farrowed at least one litter.

Gilts

A gilt is a young female pig. This name is used whether it’s just a few months old getting close to its first birthday. ...

Technically, however, the term gilt is defined as a female pig that is less than six months old who is capable of breeding and making babies.
